Sir Patrick Hamilton held the lands of Kincavil, near Linlithgow, and belonged to the wider house of Hamilton, one of the great powers of early sixteenth-century Scotland.
He was killed in 1520 in street fighting in Edinburgh between the Hamiltons and their rivals, while his son was completing his studies in Paris. The loss marks the moment the family's story passes to the next generation.
In the film he anchors the world of Kincavil: loyalty, lineage and the expectations placed on a nobleman's son.
