James Beaton became Archbishop of St Andrews in 1522 and was a leading figure in both church and government during the minority of King James V.
It was Beaton who summoned Patrick Hamilton to St Andrews in 1528. In the film he embodies the authority of the old order, and the belief that silencing one voice could stop an idea.
